Mighty

The UMBC mascot is the Chesapeake Bay Retriever. They resemble a chocolate lab with curly cowlicks on their backs. There’s a sculpture of one on campus named True Grit. The sculpture’s nose has been rubbed shiny by people passing by. I rubbed his nose myself on my way off campus, after my first visit to learn about the project, when it was still in the competitive bidding process. A guy passing by saw me and wished me, “Good luck!” I realized that the sculpture’s shiny bronze nose indicated that True Grit was a talisman for the whole campus. This is my homage to True Grit in the mosaic. I named this dog Mighty.
