The Muses is a public art project. It will be installed in Sherman Hall on the campus of the University of Maryland– Baltimore County. The project is being administered by Nora Howell of the Maryland State Arts Council.
The Muses is a large mosaic made of natural stone, with bits and bobs of glass, ceramic, and metal. It is a diptych, two panels on the same wall, separated by a structural column. Each panel is 5'8" tall and 24'8" long. It is scheduled to be installed late 2026.
The artwork depicts the nine Muses and their parents, Mnemosyne, the Goddess of Memory, and Zeus, gathered at the family dinner table. It updates the traditional iconography of the muses as passive inspiration, and gives the young women greater agency and creative expression.
